Community Food Sharing 🍱💛

Updated: Jan 18, 2022

Our team, located in Batam, Indonesia has held a program called 'A Table for Two' . Participants have been cooking food and driving around town to offer a box to each person found on the street in the span of 1 month all while maintaining COVID-19 protocols in order to eliminate hunger and spread smiles!

To start, we have chosen to focus on the priority group of people like construction workers and all underprivileged children and adults alike. Our job was to pack and cook lunches for all these people and put them in boxes which we can easily distribute. Then came the best part - the distribution stage.

There’s nothing more fulfilling than the joy of giving back!

What one of our member says

The name of this program, 'A Table for Two', was derived from the fact that, on that specific day, we were going to prepare two meals: for ourselves and as many people in unfortunate circumstances as we could provide. We had prepared lunch meals, wrapped in a box, to be given to the poor. Apart from taking us a couple of hours to prepare, the boxes, in addition, had to be delivered. We had stopped at multiple traffic light areas to begin the distribution because most of the poor people were seen.

Initially, my team, which was made up of 8 IB students in total (4 volunteers and 4 DOP members), was very enthusiastic. We'd soon learned that it required quite a bit of work and effort, which we were equally happy with doing as time went on. For this reason, we will continue to hold such an event as many times as we'd like. We know that holding it once will not make any difference. Our team understands that our project is all about witnessing change.

Personally, I've learned a lot from this event: the essence of teamwork and the joy of bringing a smile to another. At the core of this experience, we had to be caring individuals, a key IB learner profile. We had to be equally open-minded to jump into situations which we were unfamiliar with – such as the time when we had to distribute the boxes to people wearing unique costumes at the traffic light.

Overall, I've learned a lot, and there was a lot for me to cherish and everyone who worked on this project!
